Knife (2024) by Salman Rushdie, one of the most highly anticipated novels of the year, will be released this month. The first full-length book Rushdie has published since he was attacked on stage, the memoir discusses his process of healing from his physical and psychological wounds. Whilst at first glance, it may seem like a depressing read, Rushdie infuses the book with a sense of positivity as he interweaves the text with meditations on love, art and with fictional conversations with his assailant which ultimately empower him. Thus, with Knife, Rushdie elevates the form of the memoir.

Brown Girls Down Under is a podcast hosted by two Sri-Lankan girls, Deshani and Shenali, as they talk about navigating life as immigrants in Australia. It was launched earlier this year and is slowly growing in popularity. What stands out about the podcast are their unique perspectives on common immigrant experiences as well as their light-hearted banter. The topics discussed range from generational work ethics to navigating relationships to the atrocity that was Padma and Parvati’s Yule Ball gowns in Harry Potter. With new episodes every Saturday, they’re a great way to get your weekend started.

The Goat Life (2024) is the third highest grossing Malayalam film of all time, and the good news is, it has recently been released on Netflix in multiple languages to be watched in the comfort of your own home. The film, based on a true story of an Indian immigrant in Saudi Arabia who is forced into slavery, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. If you’re into survival thrillers but have had enough of movies about zombies and natural disasters that are highly unlikely to occur, then The Goat Life might be for you.

It’s likely going to be a long winter and we’re all in our snacking era. What better time than now to fill our cupboards with ‘mixture’ AKA Bombay Mix?’ For those who aren’t familiar with this snack, ‘mixture’ is exactly what it sounds like, it’s a mixture of various ingredients such as curry leaves, peanuts, dried peas and more. With numerous types and flavours of mixture, there’s something for every palate; it’s no wonder that it’s become a hallmark of many Indian parties. Not to mention, it’s the ultimate comfort food when paired with a hot cup of chai.
