Sharda Kala Kendra presents Swar Sandhya – an evening of Karaoke style singing of Hindi film songs with Sameer Khan, a talented Melbourne based Ghazal and Sufi singer.
Sameer was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and learnt music from the age of 13 from various teachers including Ustad Hussain Baksh Gullu and his two sons, Ustad Chand Khan and Ustad Suraj Khan. He belongs to the Patiala gharana made famous by the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Sameer is a verstatile singer, equally proficient in classical, semi-classical, Ghazal, Bollywood and Qavvali. He has performed professionally around Australia.
Sameer will be accompanied on the Tabla by Dr. Nadeem Malik, a Social science Researcher and Academic at the University of Melbourne. Starting at age 14, Dr. Malik learnt the art of Tabla first from Ustad Inayat Ali Sultani, then from Master Dilawar (a Guru-bhai of Ustad Allah Rakha), and more recently from Ustad Tari Khan. Notably, Dr. Malik had major spinal surgery in 2011 that left him completely paralysed. Yet he worked hard to regain some of his Tabla playing skills, which became his therapy during his recovery.
